Hi again everyone!I recently acquired a new client to whom I will be providing IT support.Unfortunately, the documented password for their Sonicwall TZ205 does not work. I called the tech who used to provide support for this company but he insists that the documented password is correct.
I'm not sure if he truly believes this or if he is simply bitter due to losing the contract. Either way, I can't get into the damned firewall.From what I have gathered, there is no feature on a Sonicwall that will allow you to reset the password without resting all the configs.Do you think a brute force crack would work? From what I can tell, the lockout policy is not configured. Also, the former technician was extremely lazy. Most of his passwords are simply a few lowercase letters long; therefor, a complex utility will probably not be necessary. Can someone point me in the right direction?Is this even worth my time to research/attempt.or should I go ahead and reset/rebuild? Rebuilding would be very expensive due to the many VPN/port forwarding rules with locations across the state.Thank you all so very much.Bobby.
I can't disagree with the argument that asking users to constantly change and remember complex passwords is problematic, but I think it's at least worth noting that an example passphrase 'My dog is purple' may have a character length of 17, but is effective length to an attacker that knows that the password is actually a passphrase, and adjusts his attack accordingly, is four. It's four common English words. You said that hackers adjust their algorithms to match known password creation habits. So now instead of common passwords of '12345' and 'abc123', we have common passphrases like 'My dog is purple' and 'The sky is blue'.
'Green eggs and Ham'. 'Make it so number one'. It would seem that at that point, we'd be back to where we started.
Is this a valid concern? Adam is right, boot to safe mode. Not sure if you lose all settings, but I think you do and have to restore from a backup.Support can't reset your password. I just called this week as I couldn't get into the web management from Firefox. Could get in using the console/putty, but not FF.

Spoke to support, that was the option of last resort - reset and restore from backup. Turns out, embarrassingly now that I admit it publicly, that IE works but not FF.So, lesson learned: Make sure you have a current backup.
